What do kids really need this Christmas?

As Christmas approaches, I find myself reflecting on what’s truly meaningful—especially with three growing kids in the house. With Juul at 13 and the twins, Seppe and Roeline now 15, I’m more mindful than ever of the fleeting nature of time and the need for deeper connections. I also find myself wanting less stuff—less plastic, fewer things that will end up in a forgotten corner of their room. What they (and we) need are gifts that last—gifts that go beyond the wrapping paper and last far beyond Christmas morning.

So, this year, I’m focusing on thoughtful, lasting gifts and experiences. Here’s what I think kids—my kids—really need this Christmas:

Time Together, Outdoors

With screens dominating so much of their lives, getting outside as a family has never felt more important. The past year, we've spent more time biking together, whether it's quick trips to the local park or adventures a bit further afield. I love seeing them unplug from the digital world and just enjoy the moment—riding, chatting, and discovering new spots.
Instead of toys that will soon be forgotten, I’m hoping to spend more time on the bikes—exploring, making memories, and just being together. It's these moments, like biking to a beach or stopping for ice cream, that stay with them and me.

Experiences Over Stuff

More than anything, I want them to appreciate the joy of doing rather than having. This year, I’m thinking of creating experiences that last longer than the holidays. It could be a family adventure day, a cooking class, or even a pottery workshop (though I’ll admit, I’m better on a bike than with clay!). I want to build memories we can look back on and say, “Remember that day?”

Thoughtful, Long-Lasting Gifts

I’m done with disposable things that clutter up the house. Instead, I want to give gifts that last. Whether it’s a good book that sparks curiosity, a subscription that they look forward to each month, or a quality item they’ll treasure for years, I want what’s under the tree to be meaningful and sustainable. No more plastic gadgets—just thoughtful, intentional gifts.

Staying Connected with Loved Ones

With family spread out, especially in the Netherlands, staying connected is one of the best gifts we can give and receive. I’m encouraging the kids to send letters or postcards to their cousins and grandparents, and I’d love for them to get the same in return. In a world of instant messaging, there’s something so special about receiving a handwritten note or a letter that traveled across the world.

Honoring Promises

One thing that’s stood out to me as the kids have grown is how much they value reliability. When we promise an outing, or say we’ll do something special, they remember—and hold us to it. Whether it's a bike ride, a movie night, or a simple dinner together, they cherish these moments. This year, I want to be more intentional with my promises, knowing they’re not just words—they’re bonds.

A Shift Towards Sustainability

Finally, I’m on a mission to make our Christmas as eco-friendly as possible. Less plastic, fewer one-use items, and more sustainable choices. It feels good to know we’re contributing to a healthier planet in small ways—and teaching the kids the importance of thoughtful consumption.

So, if you ask me what my kids need this Christmas, it’s not the latest gadget or the hottest toy on the market. They need time, connection, and experiences that make them feel valued and loved. This year, that’s what I’ll be focusing on—more time spent together, fewer things under the tree, and lasting memories for us all.

Wishing you all a meaningful, joyful holiday season.
