Cargo biking with your dog can be a fantastic way to transport your furry companion while running errands or going on adventures together. Cargo bikes provide a safe and convenient way to carry your dog, along with other items you may need. We have a wide range of bikes that suit pets. Some are front-loading bikes, with a carrying capacity of 100kg, and some have a basket on the front or rear of your more regular-sized bike. Some tips below;
- Choose the right cargo bike: There are various types of cargo bikes available, including those with a front box or a rear cargo area. Consider the size and weight of your dog when selecting a cargo bike. Ensure that the cargo area is spacious enough for your dog to sit comfortably or lie down.
- Introduce your dog to the cargo bike: Before heading out on a ride, give your dog time to become familiar with the cargo bike. Let them explore it and get comfortable with the space. It’s essential that your dog feels secure and at ease before hopping in. Treats often work great to make sure they are complimented on perfect behaviour.
- Use a secure leash or harness: Make sure your dog is securely attached to the cargo bike. Use a leash or harness that is specifically designed for biking with dogs. This will prevent your dog from jumping out or falling off the bike during the ride. Most of the Dutch Cargo Bikes have a hook, bar or straps to attach the leash.
- Provide comfort and safety: Place a comfortable and non-slippery mat or cushion in the cargo area for your dog to sit or lie on. This will ensure a more enjoyable ride for your pet. Additionally, consider installing a safety barrier or netting around the cargo area to provide added security and prevent your dog from accidentally jumping out. We use a pillow, rubber mat or a strip of fake grass to make it more comfortable for your dog.
- Start with short rides: Begin with short practice rides to allow your dog to acclimate to the motion and sensation of being in a moving cargo bike. Gradually increase the duration and distance as your dog becomes more comfortable.
- Consider weather conditions: Be mindful of the weather and temperature. Avoid biking in extreme heat or cold, as it can be uncomfortable or even dangerous for your dog. Provide proper ventilation and shade in the cargo area, and consider using a rain cover or blanket during adverse weather conditions. Bring along some water in case they get hot. Most Dutch Cargo Bikes come with a sun and/or rain hood, perfect for kids, and also the furry friends!
- Observe traffic rules and safety precautions: When riding with your dog, always obey traffic rules and practice safe riding habits. Stay alert, use hand signals, and be cautious of pedestrians, vehicles, and other cyclists. Make sure your cargo bike is equipped with proper lights and reflectors for visibility.
