Modeled after proven automobile transmission technology, Pinion gearboxes use spur gearing with two sub-units connected in sequence. The individual gear ratios are derived by matching the two sub-units with various cog pairings. The steps between gears are evenly spaced and an ergonomically sensible gear ratio range is built specific to the area of application.

High efficiency and low wear.
In Pinion gearboxes, power is transmitted through only two sets of cogs. This results in consistently high efficiency, minimal noise and a direct, lossless feeling at the pedals. The redundant gears and increased chain wear of other drivetrains simply do not apply to Pinion gearboxes.
You can shift through full range gears all at once, shift part-way, or one at a time – while stationary or while riding.

How it works

Sub Unit

First is a finely graduated sub-unit with 6 gears.
This is where finely stepped gear shifting takes place.
In the second sub-unit, the gears of the first sub-unit are multiplied. This results in the corresponding gear ratio range of the gearbox.

Engagement Gear

Here the 7th gear is engaged. The two meshed gear pairs from the sub-units are shown, which transfer pedaling forces. The other cogs spin freely and without resistance.

Lightning Fast Shifting

At the planetary gear, the rotary motion at the shift lever is transmitted directly to the camshaft in the gearbox. This controls the pawls. A rotation of the camshaft actuates the next shift pawl and engages a new gear.

Reduced unsprung mass and central weight

Being located around the bottom bracket of the main frame, most of the drivetrain mass (aside from the chain, rear hub and rear sprocket) is situated low and central on the bike which increases stability of the system.

Moreover, this takes weight off of the rear triangle / axle and puts it on a part of the bike supported by the suspension. This makes the rear suspension system lighter and able to react quicker to terrain and generally do a better job!

As the whole gearing system is sealed it is protected from the elements and thus doesn’t need constant cleaning and lubrication (especially if you then swap out the chain for a belt drive that doesn’t need lubrication). The gearbox only requires oiling every 10 000 km or so and the process is a 10 minute job.

With one chainring in front and 1 sprocket on the rear hub, you can achieve a straight chainline which greatly reduces wear on the chain (making it almost impossible to snap one) and reduces drag slightly.
